ANS: How mechanical work is responsible for the creation of heat

The idea that mechanical work was responsible for the creation of heat was started in clearer terms by Mayer, Joule, Helmholtz, and Colding. Each measured the heat produced by the performance of definite amounts of mechanical work. In each case the quotient of the energy expended and the heat produced was found to be a constant. This experience was generalized and stated as a consequence of the law of conservation of energy: the total quantity of energy in a closed system (heat being a form of energy) is constant. This principle is called the first law of thermodynamics.
