The significance of a partial may be determined most readily, by the Z transformation. The S.E. = 1 / N -3 and the S.E. of the Z corresponding to r 123 is = 1 / N – 4 one degree of freedom is subtracted from N for each variable eliminated, in addition to the 3 already lost. So for r 1234 the S.E. of the corresponding Z is 1 / N – 3 – 2 = 1 / N – 5

Suppose that r 1234= 0.5 and N = 41 is the partial r significant also determine 95 percent confidence limits.

Solution: S.E. = 1/H - 5 = 1/41 – 5 = 0.167

The Z corresponding to r of 0.50 is 0.55 hence r 1234 is significant.

The 95 percent confidence interval for the population Z is

0.55 ± 1.95 x 0.167 or from 0.223 to 0.877

Suppose that r 1234= 0.5 and N = 41 is the partial r significant also determine 95 percent confidence limits.
